Mind-ing What does storing language in a box mean? Things that make me think.

"A Fish Story" - a mobile motion picture→

thought: Totally caught off guard (twice)!  It’s like I got played, but in an endearing, teasing way.  How far would you go to save a fish?  Or is it really about the fish?

All shot on a phone, eight Nokia Shorts 2011 finalists, including the Jury Prize winner, premiered at the Edinburgh Film Festival.  This was the first of its kind for “pocket-sized” productions to be shown on the big screen.  “A Fish Story” was amongst these selected mobile pictures and my most favorite one.  To visit the official Nokia Shorts 2011 Vimeo page, click here.

English as a Foreign Language (EFL) - Endearing Compositions

As my “short tenure” as Assistant Language Teacher draws to a close, many reflective moments come and go. My students in junior high school this year have really been challenged by their English teachers, especially in writing.  Obviously, the more content the more interesting errors prop up!  From the First Semester Finals, here are the ones that stood out (or are mere representatives…).

**(Part 1) I challenge you to find the mistakes:

(1) Can you come to the panty?

(2) vegetube

(3a) potruck party —> this just made me nostalgic about the pottruck gym back in college.

(3b) postlack party —> does this sound anything like the intended word? conjures the idea of a diarrhea party…

(4) This is your febly team? —> wasn’t trying to describe a feeble team.

(5) On May 17th, we 9th greats went to Kyoto for a school trip.

(6) I tasted so good.

** (Part 2) Content that provoked a strong reaction:

  • A rather competitive sibling relationship no?  The student’s word choice, not mine:

When I was five years old, I didn’t like yogurt.  It was so sour for me.  But, my sister could eat yogurt.  My mother praised my sister.  It was mortifying.  So, I ate yogurt every day. Until one day, I liked yogurt.  Now,it is my favorite food.  I eat yogurt every day.

  • Reflections on a recent school trip.  So honest for a test:
  1. It was so fun!  I learned about human relations in this trip.
  2. It’s difficult for me to forget this memory.
  • Speaks for itself:

I liked deers better than temples.  So, a man taught me how to touch deers.

thought:  I’ve always wanted to fuse my interests to learn more about sustainability and entrepreneurial efforts with my (super) love for bread.  Not a particularly new approach, but its success is inspirational and contributes to building momentum for more future good driven business models. (also a pretty exciting economics case study).
good:

Panera CEO Ronald Shaich opened up the first nonprofit branch of his 1,400-plus location restaurant chain in Clayton, Missouri, in 2010. At the time some thought his pay-what-you-want model, in which customers could simply take free food if they needed it, would be a disaster, especially in the midst of America’s hardest economy in decades. Early indications, however, were that Shaich’s idea, officially called the Panera Cares Community Café, might succeed. Now, one year later, people are certain: The free Panera is a hit.
